New York PostLiz SmithJanuary 17, 2006 -- 'BEING POPULAR is important. Otherwise people might not like you," quips the humorist Mimi Pond. MARIA Conchita Alonso is the latest addition to ABC's "Desperate Housewives." She will play Eva Longoria's mother, and her story line, at this point, is significant. The Cuban singer/actress is still a knockout, and easily could have played Eva's role only a few years back. Hell, she could do it now. TODAY, the showbiz world is buzzing over the Golden Globe wins and what it'll mean for Oscar. But the days before the GGs were hot, too. This is party season, baby, and nobody wants to miss a red carpet. Last Wednesday Gregory Colbert's art exhibit, "Ashes and Snow" at the Nomadic Museum on Santa Monica Pier brought out Teri Hatcher, Donna Karan, Marisa Tomei, Robert Evans, Ali MacGraw, John Waters, Bianca Jagger, Daryl Hannah and even veteran legend Maureen O'Hara, still a feisty, flame-haired beauty. Artist Colbert's images of wild animals interacting with humans (staged by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban) was a big hit, underwritten by Rolex. The next night, Cher (she was also at the above exhibit) appeared at social gadfly Nikki Haskell's party for Rolex CEO Patrick Heiniger. I guess Patrick wants to make his mark in Hollywood! Cher, so often reclusive, spent the evening sitting with George Schlatter, who had produced her "Cher" TV show - this was after divorce ended "The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour" series. Schlatter said, "She called me 'Hammer' and I called her 'Nails.' I was always trying to get her to do more, and she was always getting her nails done. But seriously, I never saw anybody who did more and wore less!" Talk turned to the late Sonny Bono, and everybody agreed he would have loved Cher's now immortal three-year "farewell tour," which the Oscar-winning star says was the culmination of her gaudy, girlish dreams of entertainment - sitting astride that giant, glitzy elephant, etc. (This was her homage to Roz Russell in "Auntie Mame," and we're asking, when will she do the Jerry Herman TV musical version?!) At the party, Cher sang "Happy Birthday" to the legend himself, Army Archerd. Everyone - from Dennis Hopper to Cheryl Tiegs to Stephen Dorff - said it was a night to remember.

Venezuelan VP to McCain: 'Go to Hell'

By CHRISTOPHER TOOTHAKER, Associated Press Writer 2 hours, 58 minutes ago
CARACAS, Venezuela - Venezuela's vice president derided Sen. John McCain (
news, bio, voting record) for suggesting that "wackos" run the South American country, saying Monday that the United States should focus on its own problems.

Jose Vicente Rangel was responding to McCain's statement on Sunday that America must explore alternative energy sources to avoid depending on

News News Photos Images Web' name=c3> Iran or "wackos" in Venezuela — apparently a reference to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.
"It looks like they have nothing else to do in the United States," Rangel said, adding that the Americans have "so many problems, 40 million poor people, 30 million drug users, and an American senator is paying attention to us. He can go to hell."
McCain, a potential Republican presidential contender in 2008, said recent actions by Chavez and by Iran's leaders make it clear that the United States will be vulnerable as long as it remains dependent on foreign energy.
"We've got to get quickly on a track to energy independence from foreign oil, and that means, among other things, going back to nuclear power," the Arizona senator said on Fox News Sunday. "We better understand the vulnerabilities that our economy, and our very lives, have when we're dependent on Iranian mullahs and wackos in Venezuela."
Despite political differences between Caracas and Washington, the United States remains the top buyer of oil from Venezuela, the world's No. 5 exporter.
Chavez has repeatedly accused the United States of conspiring to topple his government, an allegation U.S. officials deny.
The Venezuelan leader says his government would halt oil exports to the United States if Washington ever attempted to invade this South American nation
